Alain Reymond about materials as a driving factor of aesthetic and new forms

Alain Reymond, who was born
and grew up in Basel, initially studied business management and political
economics at the University of Basel. His passion for beautiful things then
prompted him to do an Executive Master in Design | Art + Innovation at Basel
Academy of Art and Design. In 2017, he obtained a master’s degree in cultural management at the
University of Basel. After starting out at
Laufen Bathrooms AG in product management, he is now the Swiss ceramic specialist’s
Head of Design Management.
Most
limitations in design result from the material and the production processes
that are possible with it. But the reverse is also true: a material
innovation can eliminate those limitations and lead not just to new forms but
to a totally new aesthetic. In addition to a passion for
experimentation, that also calls for innovativeness, courage, far-sightedness
and design management that’s firmly anchored in the corporate culture. For Swiss
bathroom brand Laufen, its self-developed SaphirKeramik was precisely such a
game-changer: it presented the company with new technical challenges and led to
a totally new appreciation of form and aesthetics. The innovative development of this
material revolutionised ceramic sanitaryware design and helped establish a new
spatial experience in bathroom architecture.
