Human scale: people are the benchmark in the bathroom

03/25
  • trends

It is the everyday tasks and special moments, the time-outs, the physical experience and the daily rituals that make the bathroom a real living space. People set the standard for bathroom layout, equipment functions and design. Their needs, their individuality and their personalised approach are becoming increasingly important - not only in purchasing decisions, but also in the development and marketing of products. This globally noticeable shift in perspective will have a lasting impact on the planning, marketing and realisation of bathrooms.

The use of a bathroom is closely linked to the daily rhythm of its users. Professional bathroom planning is based on the natural rhythm and regularity of everyday life. Just as a person's daily routine conveys a sense of stability and structure in life, professional bathroom planning is based on the needs and activities of the residents. There are several design levels that form complex interrelationships in terms of product and bathroom planning. Ideally, the lighting alone is adapted to the user's daily routine and takes into account the influence of natural light as well as their individual wishes and also supports the necessary functions with modern lighting systems: For example, only discreet lighting is required when going to the toilet at night, functional, bright light is needed for the morning toilet, and emotional lighting is useful for "winding down" in the evening. Other design levels in bathroom planning include usage zones, the wall or floor design and the sanitaryware.

Storytelling and human scale: ISH Trends 25 provide bathroom professionals with valuable solutions

What can you do in the bathroom? What needs do bathroom users have and how can bathroom planners realise these requirements in professional bathroom planning? The trend researchers from Pop up my Bathroom are presenting around 200 different activities in eleven categories at ISH 2025. This catalogue of requirements is a compendium for people-oriented bathroom planning.

    Human Scale:
    1. Body Care in the Bathroom

    03/25

The line between personal hygiene and personal care is blurred, and much of both is part of our everyday routine. Nevertheless, the decisive criterion for personal hygiene is probably the extent of the care activities that we give our bodies over and above the necessary basics - for health care, beauty care or simply because it does us good.

      2. Personal Hygiene in the Bathroom

      03/25

The washbasin also plays an important role in personal hygiene.

        3. Everyday Routines in the Bathroom

        03/25

We wash our hands 6 to 10 times a day, usually shower every day or every other day and use the toilet six to ten times a day.

          Human Scale:
          4. Mental Activities in the Bathroom

          03/25

How many great ideas have you had during a revitalising shower? How relaxing can a bath in a free-standing bathtub be? And where better for people to be alone and retreat to a quiet place to think in peace?

            Human Scale:
            5. Fitness in the Bathroom

            03/25

For many people today, maintaining and training fitness is part of their everyday routine - almost like personal hygiene.

              Human Scale:
              6. Pleasure & Fun in the Bathroom

              03/25

Children in particular love the bathroom: here they can play with water at the tap or splash around in the bath and blow bubbles to their heart's content.

                Human Scale:
                7. Styling in the Bathroom

                03/25

The bathroom is a static room per se, as the water-bearing sanitary products almost invariably dictate the aesthetics of the room.

                  03/25

In a recent survey of over 3,000 bathroom users conducted by the German Sanitary Industry Association (VDS), 93% of respondents said that they would look for hygienic and easy-care fittings when redesigning their bathroom.

                    03/25

Your own wellness oasis, a private spa or simply a retreat with a water connection: the concepts for describing a private bathroom with added value are diverse.

                      10. Act Sustainably in the Bathroom

                      03/25

Water is a scarce and increasingly expensive resource, and energy prices are likely to remain high in the long term. Regardless of the size of the household, one of the greatest potential savings lies in the day-to-day use of the bathroom.

                        11. Healthcare in the Bathroom

                        03/25

People's perception of their health is no longer based solely on how they feel, but also on what they actively do for their health.
