Pop up my Bathroom exhibition at ISH digital 2021
In 2021, the pandemic meant that the
two-yearly ISH, the world’s leading trade fair for water, heating and
air-conditioning, took place almost entirely in the digital space. With one
exception: Pop up my Bathroom presented three of the most important current
trends in bathroom planning in the form of a real physical showcase.
And even though nobody came to visit
the event that has been so popular in previous ISH years, it was nevertheless
seen by many: as a digital 360-degree exhibition with three trend installations
that integrated more than 80 bathroom products from 12 participating ISH
exhibitors, the Inside | Outside showcase depicts the most important trend
developments in the bathroom. As a result, it became a genuine highlight of
the trade fair and succeeded in communicating analogue content through digital
means. One major advantage of this hybrid format is that its impact extends
beyond the location and duration of the event.
Inside | Outside - the trend showcase motto
The importance of holistic bathroom
planning is growing – for all market participants in the bathroom sector. Whereas the
bathroom “in front of the wall” is becoming increasingly cosy and gradually
evolving into a lifestyle space, increasingly complex technology is required “behind
the wall” in order to install the bathroom products. That’s why the makers of the
exhibition are drawing attention to the synchronisation of design and
technology with the trend showcase motto: Inside | Outside. The
framework for the three trend installations, entitled Living Bathroom, Smart Bathroom
and Green Bathroom, is provided by prefabricated prewall elements from Geberit. The self-supporting
technology panels determine the architecture of the exhibition in the form of
simple isometries. At the same time, the unfinished look of the
trend showcase provides impressive insights into a bathroom’s inner workings. Transparent
walls merge with elements of the interior design.
“With this year’s Pop up my Bathroom trend showcase for the ISH digital
2021, we particularly want to provide added value for architects and
tradespeople – the products in front of the wall will increasingly merge with
the products behind the wall. This integrative approach to holistic bathroom
planning will revolutionise the way new bathrooms are implemented in the next
few years. Building owners will benefit from more creativity and greater
flexibility. And we anticipate that prefabrication will result in a significant time
saving for architects and tradespeople,” says Jens J. Wischmann, managing
director of the VDS, in explanation of the focus of this year’s Pop
up my Bathroom trend platform.
The video clips recorded in the exhibition, in which Jens J. Wischmann
guides viewers through the installations and explains the trends, were part of
ISH digital 2021 and are also available via the Pop up my Bathroom YouTube
channel. Anyone especially interested in the new launches on show can access
views and details of all the exhibits in a 360-degree tour.
Storytelling: the top trends of the bathroom
Modern bathroom planning sticks to a particular theme or need. In the
three trends described by Pop up my Bathroom, the wish for a cosy bathroom
that’s a pleasure to spend time in, the desire for modern equipment and
furnishings with functional added value and a high degree of customisability,
as well as growing expectations with regard to sustainability, all play into
each other.
Because whether the project involves a new build or the renovation of an
existing room – today’s bathroom is a space sensation, private spa, innovation
hub and the reflection of a modern interior design, all rolled into one. Pop up my
Bathroom provides an up-to-the-minute overview of the three most important
trends in the bathroom: the top trends Living Bathroom, Smart Bathroom and
Green Bathroom feature all the design and equipment options of a modern
bathroom.

Living Bathroom: the bathroom is increasingly becoming a lifestyle space
The Living Bathroom is a response to the still-growing demand for an
individual, comfortable, convenient and cosy wellness retreat in one’s own four
walls. Cosiness, zeitgeist, fashion and style are very much in demand as the
cornerstones of a professionally planned bathroom, as are modern usage concepts
that enhance the quality of the space and permit health-related activities. It’s
featuring more furniture and more fabrics, is more flexible and more
attractive. And all that is reflected in the new launches from the ISH digital 2021
exhibitors.
The Living Bathroom is a bathroom concept that turns routines into rituals
and water into an experience. There is no other room that brings
together the desire for cosiness and the fun of styling a special
setting or where the need for wellness can be combined with a passion
for fitness. And the wellness effect is dependent not just on
elements like a rainfall shower, a sauna or premium furnishings but on
soft factors like ambience, warmth and sensuous surroundings too.

Smart Bathroom: Innovative technology optimises procedures and routines
Rather than showing the bathroom of a distant tomorrow, Pop up my
Bathroom portrays the Smart Bathroom equipped with the technical possibilities
of our time. The combination of products that are already on the market results in an
exemplary Smart Bathroom: a mirror that doubles as an information centre, smart
controls for water applications in the shower, app-controlled shower toilets,
UV-based hygiene functions, intelligent lighting control via Alexa and co, and touchless
technologies – all these features will become increasingly common.
Thanks to smart technology, the bathroom can be programmed to appeal to
all the senses. An innovative lighting control system, a video
wall in the shower area, a shower experience like a monsoon or a light summer
rain, the sounds of nature and tempting fragrances: smart technology can create
an even more intense experience in the bathroom.

Green Bathroom : Resource conservation and the feeling of being close to nature
The Green Bathroom is an evergreen that’s playing an increasingly
important role for the bathroom sector. But the way to a sustainable bathroom
isn’t only paved with highly complex technical products and state-of-the-art
technologies; products made of natural and/or recyclable materials that can be
used for many years to come also play a vital role. The Green Bathroom is a
future concept that strives for the optimal combination of smart, water-saving
and energy-saving products, eco-friendly industrial production, sustainable
materials and enduring design – while simultaneously conveying a sense of being
in touch with nature.
But up until now, there hasn’t been much focus
on these aspects in the storytelling that goes with the planning for a new
bathroom. That seems to be changing: private home owners are more and more mindful
of ensuring a positive environmental footprint and increasingly demanding a
“green” bathroom. The Green Bathroom is a top trend and will
dominate bathroom planning in the years ahead.
