Stilwerk Hotel Heimhude: sophisticated interior design even under the shower

Coherent ensemble: This bathroom focuses on the color anthracite, which is why the matching shower tray in the color Raven was chosen here.

Freshly renovated and lovingly furnished, the first Stilwerk hotel is centrally located between the university and the Alster lake in Hamburg’s Rotherbaum district. The art nouveau villa dates back more than 150 years and has 24 rooms, each of which combines dignified charm with a captivating interior featuring products selected from the design platform’s own cosmos. Natural materials, handmade items from European boutique manufacturers and loving attention to detail are intended to give guests a genuine home-away-from-home experience. When it came to the bathrooms, the decision-makers opted for shower trays by Bette.

But the Stilwerk hotel isn’t just intended for overnight stays, it can also be used for testing what it’s like to live with the products and shopping: guests can buy the featured designs for their own four walls, either straight from the Stilwerk store at Hamburg’s Fish Market or at their own convenience from the platform’s online shop. Initial information is also available from their host at the hotel on request.

Each of the 24 rooms is individually furnished with a combination of Scandinavian craftsmanship, Italian sophistication, modern antiques and surprising details. But the small, well-appointed gym, the library, the lounge, the meeting room with adjoining garden terrace, and the open kitchen with bar and reception are all designed to inspire guests and make them feel welcome and at home as well.

Bathrooms integrated with interior concept

The flowing transition between the bedroom and bathroom area reveals a consistent color and design concept. In the background the shower tray in the color Flint.

A great deal of attention was also focused on the design of the bathrooms, which played an important role in the hotel’s innovative concept: “ Our bathrooms really set themselves apart from the hospitality mainstream when it comes to design and style: besides using high-end fittings and shower trays, we also included atmospheric eye-catchers,” explains managing director Tatjana Gross, who herself has many years of management experience in the operative hotel business, as well as in the development and implementation of hotel projects. “In terms of the colour scheme, our bathrooms have a modern, relaxed look featuring pleasant shades of green and anthracite.”

This choice of colours ensures the bathrooms are fully integrated with the hotel’s interior concept, because in many of the rooms the transitions between the sleeping area and bathroom are open and fluid. As a result, a great deal of care went into selecting not just the tiles but the shower trays as well to ensure they blend in harmoniously with the overall impression created by the colours used for the room and floor. The planners found what they were looking for in the portfolio of Delbrück-based bathroom specialist Bette, which can produce bathroom elements made of glazed titanium steel in numerous colours, including exclusive matt shades.

“The focus of the Stilwerk hotel concept is very clearly on enabling guests to experience a variety of high-end brands who are located and produce in Europe – preferably boutique manufacturers. When it came to selecting the shower trays, it was the attractive design, minimalist design language, matt finish and easy cleaning of the Bette products that convinced us. In particular, the choice of colours available from Bette included shades that were a perfect fit with the colour concept for the respective bathroom design: Flint (mint green) and Raven (anthracite),” explains Stilwerk owner Alexander Garbe.

It’s the details that make the difference

The colour concept of the shower takes up the colour pattern of the tiles. The precise corners of the shower tray and the flush drain cover are clearly visible.

But a passion for colours and design isn’t the only thing Stilwerk and Bette have in common: both companies share a passion for detail as well. The classic shower tray BetteUltra, for instance, has tight R10 corner radii that line up perfectly with the joints between the tiles. That might seem like a minor thing, but it enhances the overall look and considerably reduces the amount of silicone needed in the corners. And if the shower trays are installed on a tiled base, as they are at the Stilwerk hotel, the almost pointed corners permit a meticulous degree of accuracy that is highly aesthetic.

Drain covers in the same colour as the shower tray add another aesthetic detail: they sit flush with the surface of the tray to create an uninterrupted and homogeneous look. In addition, the hotel had the Flint-coloured shower trays equipped with Bette’s Anti-Slip Pro finish to ensure maximum safety for its guests when standing or moving in the shower. The finish conforms to the standards defined by DIN 51097 (category B) and DIN 51130 (category R10) without affecting the flawless aesthetic of the matt glaze. The company also prefits its shower trays with noise-suppressing mats as a standard feature, significantly reducing the sound of the pattering water. After all, nobody wants to hear the guest in the room next door showering late at night.
