Lecture at Pop up Atelier: Sascha Peters about 3D-prints for the bathroom

A 3D-printed bridge in Alcobendas near Madrid, the first-ever printed office building in Dubai or an electric motorbike made of aluminium that weighs just 35kg and is produced by means of additive manufacturing: these are just a few of the impressive highlights in the field of additive production seen in 2016. Generative production technologies are revolutionising traditional manufacturing and complementing, expanding or replacing conventional processes with new options. 

Dr. Sascha Peters is amongst the leading materials experts and trend scouts for new technologies. The founder and owner of Haute Innovation, an agency for materials and technology, studied Mechanical Engineering at RWTH Aachen University and Product Design at Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts. Between 1997 and 2003, he led research projects and product developments at the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology (IPT). He then served as Deputy Director of the Bremen Design Centre until 2008. In 2014, he was appointed to the advisory board of the initiative “Twenty20 – Partnership for Innovation” by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Dr. Peters is the author of numerous best-selling specialist publications. 

However, due to the fact that most systems have a limited build volume, the pioneers of the 3D printing scene have rarely turned their attention to classic interior segments up until now. But as additive production processes evolve and new materials are launched, it looks as if this is set to change over the next few years. In January 2016, US producer American Standard presented the world’s first-ever bathroom fitting to be additively manufactured using selective laser sintering (SLS), thus giving an impressive demonstration of the possibilities that additive technologies open up when it comes to components and products for the bathroom and sanitary sector.
