Grohe: A room with a view - atop a harbour crane

09/14

An exceptional piece of industrial heritage with a spectacular view: Amsterdam’s Faralda NDSM Crane Hotel offers an unforgettable hotel experience for all lovers of extravagant and exclusive accommodation. The old harbour crane is part of the former NDSM shipyard and has incorporated a small boutique hotel since the beginning of the year. Located at the heart of today’s festival site and embedded in a multi-faceted culture and arts scene, the hotel offers guests not only luxurious overnight accommodation with a breath-taking view of the waters of the IJ and the city of Amsterdam, but also immediate access to a wide range of entertainment, art and performances.

The developer behind this exceptional project is Edwin Kornmann Rudi who had the giant crane dismantled, refurbished, transformed into a design hotel and reassembled at its location on the former shipyard. He was supported by the firm IAA Architecten and interior designer Edward van Vliet. By inserting an additional ceiling in the crane operator cabin, this space was split into a luxury suite comprised of a living area and a bedroom area. The other two suites are housed in containers mounted below and above the former crane cabin. Among others Grohe was industrial partner for the bathroom interior.

Access to the three suites as well as the rooftop Jacuzzi and lounge platform is via two panoramic elevators, which carry guests to the three distinctly designed suites. The Mystique Suite sits at a height of 45 metres above ground. A room concept based on the language of the orient means that guests will marvel at the seductive colours, opulent fabrics, exquisite materials and exceptional designer furniture. Highlights include the panoramic view from the bathtub through the tall windows on the upper split level. Here the free-standing Allure tub filler made by Grohe with swivel spout and integrated Sena hand shower adds a spa and wellness feel to the bathroom area. This is why a matching Allure basin mixer was installed on the wall in the shower on the lower level. Equipped from innovative thermostat technology in the shape of a concealed Grohtherm F thermostat as well as a Euphoria Cosmopolitan hand shower.

Perched below the Mystique Suite, at 40 metres above ground level, the Secret Suite is decked out in vibrant colours and abstract forms, which translate the classic orient theme to the present. An abundance of colourful cushions, exotically decorated lamps and a free-standing bathtub with elegantly curved feet give this suite a homely ambiance. The Allure faucets are joined by the ultra-flat Rainshower F-Series shower on the ceiling, which blends in smoothly with the aesthetic surroundings.

The Free Spirit suite at 35 metres above ground level takes its design cues from the harbour and shipbuilding heritage of the locale. A little more sober in style and decorated in soft and bright colours, the bathroom is accentuated by the black bathtub encasement. Like its counterparts in the other two suites, this bathroom features faucets and showers of Grohe as well as a Skate Cosmopolitan wall plate with dual flush to encourage sustainable use of the precious resource that is water.
